What Obama has Learned From Great Advertising
Budweiser
Budweiser ads always operate by what I call “the Man Code.” The code defines the values of the “fraternity of man.” Honor, loyalty, respect, and a commitment to a good time permeate the Brand’s ethos. I believe this is best exemplified by the “True” campaign, but in reality, it is an ongoing thread throughout most (if not all) Budweiser advertising.
Dove
Dove is famous for making waves in with their viral video hit, Evolution. The spot expresses the frustrations of women everywhere as they strive to meet an unrealistic standard of beauty. By providing a mouthpiece for women everywhere, Dove was able to start a movement, “The Campaign for Real Beauty.”
Nike
Nike celebrates the athletic spirit. As such, all of their commercials exemplify the code of the athlete. Courage, determination, and perseverance are the virtues of the day.
MasterCard
The “Priceless” campaign has been a resounding success for MasterCard. Launched in 1996, the campaign still resonates to this day, putting money back in its place and reminding us of the true value of things.
Johnny Walker
Johnny Walker bills itself as a celebration of human ingenuity. The striding man represents the positivity of progress and celebrates the best of humanity. Reminds me quite a bit of Apple’s famous “Think Different” campaign. Great stuff. (I also love the Android commercial they did. Couldn’t resist putting it in here.)
Starbucks
Starbucks has famously aligned itself with social causes. Their numerous community, arts, pro-social and charitable initiatives (many of which take place on the local level) paint a picture of a company in tune with the values of a progressive audience.
